  • Homily on the Solemnity of the Annunciation (Abbot James Ryu)

It starts with the preaching part of the video during the entire Mass, and you only need to watch the preaching part (about 10 minutes). Pastor James Yu's sermon contents Today Today is a very special day. This is because it is the day when the history of mankind changes and the day the Savior was conceived. What is happening in Nazareth in Galilee right now? An angel appeared. It is a completely different event from what we experience in our daily life. Have you ever seen an angel? You can see the devil, but have you ever seen an angel? I have seen angelic people, but I have never seen an angel myself. The appearance of an angel means that a completely different event from this world will occur. The angel said to the virgin Mary: Rejoice, full of grace. I greet you first that the Lord is with you, and then I declare a great thing. It is a proclamation that “Mary will be born the son of the Most High, who is called the Son of God, and his name will be called Jesus, and he will have the throne of David, and his kingdom and kingdom will have no end.” In Israeli tradition, a son means a being in the same position as a father, sharing everything with him. This is the proclamation that Mary now gives birth to Jesus, the Son of God, who has the same power as God, through the Holy Spirit, not a human being. The story that God comes disguised as a human being is also in Greek and Roman mythology, but the story that God is born as a human son and even as a baby is an event that has never been heard in any folk tales or myths. This is an unprecedented event that has never been seen or heard of before in human history. How does Mary, the party to whom this case was declared, react? It's very surprising. An angel appeared and greeted herself, who was just a country girl. The angel's next words are even more startling. That she, who did not know a man, would give birth to a baby called the Son of God. So I ask the angel. It is not a rejection or rebellion, but a desire to know in order to believe. I'm a virgin, how do I have a baby? And it will be done by the power of the Holy Spirit, not by man, and the angel answers that nothing is impossible with God. Now Maria knows for sure. And now that I know it, I fully believe it. And thoroughly accept it. see I am the servant of the Lord. I hope it will come true for me as you said. Now Mary has been transformed into a person who seeks only God and follows His will. The dream of living as a virgin and serving in the temple for the rest of her life, which she had cherished since childhood, was also determined to use all her will and will to follow and practice God's will. Now, because of this decision, many trials await Mary, even the death of her son, but her heart is filled with grace and peace and she is not shaken in the slightest. The characteristic of a person who chooses God is that he is not shaken by anything. And even small things can lead to big results. But the one who chooses his will without choosing God is always anxious. No matter how much you do, there is no fruit. And nothing happens. If you follow God, you are afraid that you will lose or go wrong, so you always doubt, betray, and go here and there, but you can't put your mind anywhere. Because it has no root in the unchanging God. Let's take a look at the 12 apostles, a story that will happen around us by extending today's incident. Contrast with the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary hears the proclamation of the birth of Jesus and fully accepts it with reason and faith. And after accepting it, we will never change again, following only the will of God and seeking only God. When the twelve disciples were called by Jesus, they immediately left their father, boat, house, family, brothers and sisters, and land to follow. But it wasn't following Jesus. They followed their interests. It's about following your will. Apostle Peter believed that if he, who was ignorant and could not speak well, followed Jesus, who was good at speaking and had a knack for attracting audiences, he would be respected by people and rise in the world. The apostles James and John followed Jesus, expecting that one would sit on his right and the other on his left when he ascended to a high seat. Revolutionary Simon followed Jesus to defeat the oppression of the Roman Empire and win independent Israel. Judas Iscariot followed Jesus around to fill his purse and eat delicious food to his heart's content. It seemed that they had abandoned everything and followed Jesus, but in reality, they had abandoned nothing, and were only using Jesus as a tool to achieve their will. Then, when Jesus was arrested, they all ran away, thinking that their purpose had failed. That's betrayal. Even though the apostles followed Jesus, they were always anxious and confused. However, after they received the Holy Spirit, everything became peaceful. I am no longer afraid to follow Jesus and I am no longer afraid of death. Following Jesus, which had been so difficult before, became so much fun now. My body was exhausted, but my heart was filled with peace. All who choose God enjoy this peace. Now, are we really following Jesus by abandoning everything, especially our will, will, and inclination? Or do you intend to follow only when there is benefit and discard it whenever there is no profit? Religious monks and consecrated persons promise to obey. Do you obey only when it feels good and benefits you, and disobey when you feel bad, it doesn't go with your will, and you feel like you're going to lose money? Of course not. Like it or not, like the Blessed Mother, we renounce all our wills and obey with all we have. see I am the servant of the Lord. May it be done to me as you have said.

  • Message from the 2023 Consecrated Life Day

+May God be praised throughout the universe! Respected, all consecrated people of this land! The people of the world think of us as people of God who have been called by the Lord. As a man of God, where should I focus my life more this year? A few years ago, a professor at Harvard University in the United States said that the most important quality to prepare for a great future life is “kindness.” Even though people can never live alone, because of lack of kindness, they only compete with each other, wars between countries, and communities are divided due to selfishness, and society is breaking harmony. Therefore, only kind people can lead changes in the future society and become leaders. Recently, Dr. Kelly Harding, professor of psychiatry at Columbia Medical School, USA, told a similar story. According to her, how we treat each other is the essence of health problems, and when people feel unsupported and threatened, they experience burnout. It is said that a good boss is more important to health than a good doctor, and that people who meet a bad boss are 3 to 6 times more likely to die suddenly from heart disease. Just hugging each other every day as a family reduces the risk of catching a cold by 32%, and plants and animals raised by kind people get much less sick. Every comforting touch plays an important role in life, and it is said that everything from a pat on the shoulder from a friend to a hug, a handshake, and a hairdresser's haircut can lower your chances of getting sick. If these parents affectionately look their children in the eyes, watch them closely, continue to talk to their children in a state where they have stopped talking to them, and occasionally pinch their children and hold them tightly, then there is a problem with the condition or there is a problem with acquired changes, and it will definitely overcome it. and the child must grow into a different person. Would only a child make these changes? Jean Valjean, the protagonist of Victor Hugo's novel Les Misérables, has his life completely changed by a kind priest, right? Kindness has the power to heal diseases and change people, but what about people around us? If we look back for a moment, we can quickly realize what a cold and unkind world we live in. A grandfather who was hospitalized at a hospital waited for his children to visit him, but when no one came, he called his daughter who had moved and asked for the address. If you know the address you moved to, would you try to find it? I can't teach you,” and hung up the phone. It is said that the grandfather wailed loudly because of how sad he was. If children are so unkind to their parents, what use is it if they live well only materially? Parents have nothing but the ‘pleasure’ of seeing their children. Another time I visited a Buddhist missionary school in the city with foreign guests. It is a four-story building, and on each floor, Buddhists lay comfortably, and everyone was healing in their own way, listening to the monk's discourse on the monitor, chatting, and eating food. Then, when the great monk came out to meet the believers with his disciples, all the believers gathered, took pictures, and made a fuss. At that time, I thought, ‘The priests are treated very well in Buddhism’. A few days later, when I told this story to an elder nun who was very close to the monks, he explained that it was not priestly treatment, and that believers followed monks like fathers because they were really comfortable with them and liked them. This is not to get close. So that part needs to be fixed. That's right. The church isn't that warm either. There is a time when young people from several religious orders experience alms-balancing during the training period. At this time, when they go around and ask for food, temples are most generous, followed by Protestant churches, but they are often kicked out of Catholic churches. It's strange when a church with clergy and religious who always shouts out God's love is like this! If society is cold, we, consecrated people, must warm it up. We consecrated people are God's people. We are the people that anyone in the world can easily approach, regardless of religion or not. We don't ask for anything from people, we just give God's love. That love is transmitted through our kindness. You can kindly greet everyone you meet with warm words and offer sincere words of comfort to those who are tired of illness or loneliness. Even the very wealthy and rich may not hesitate to approach and ask for alms to be given to the poor. Because we are God's people, we can approach anyone without fear. If you are a monk of the Blockade Monastery, you can fervently offer kind prayers so that the people of the world may feel God's love. Kindness comes not from our strength, but from the power of the Lord who called us. Young and healthy, old and sick, in the strength of the Lord we can always be kind to all. I sincerely pray that this year 2023 will be a year in which God's kindness is freely given to everyone, and I ask for blessings from all the kind bishops of this land. On February 2, 2023, the Day of Consecrated Life Korea Men's Religious Society, President of the Council of Superiors of the Apostolic Life Group + Yoo Deok-hyeon James Abba

  • Abbot Deok-hyeon Yoo - Is there a solution to the crisis of declining vocations?

[Anchor Lead] Yesterday was the day of consecrated life to pray for the religious. However, over the past 10 years, the number of members of the religious order has steadily decreased. How do the religious who are engaged in nurturing vocations from each religious order see this? Also, one cannot help but wonder what efforts should be made to develop the capital sanctuary. Reporter Kim Hyun-jung reports. [Reporter] Over the past 10 years, the number of men and women enrolled in religious orders has steadily decreased. Compared to 10 years ago, the total number of monks increased, but the number of novices decreased. It means that the number of members of the religious order has decreased by that much. Even large monasteries with hundreds of members do not have vocations, so there are cases in which they operate international training centers in Hong Kong or the Philippines to survive. As of 2017, the parish established religious congregation has more foreigners than Korean practitioners. This also applies to both men and women. The female religious order belonging to the Apostolic Life Group has also increased the number of foreign practitioners. It is often said that monks are ‘the virtues of the church’. So it is even expressed that the virtue of the church disappears when the monks disappear. This sense of crisis is fully sympathized with by the vocational directors and priests of the religious congregation. “(The number of members of the Salesian Order) will decrease to two this year, and there will probably be none next year. I think we may be a barometer that represents the sanctuary of the capital of Korea. There are also people who say that if the number of vocations decreases in the Salesian Society, there is nothing to say about other places.” The main reason for the decrease in the number of pilgrims in the capital is the decrease in population. But monks say they need to look back on themselves first. “I think that the lack of spirituality cultivated in faith and self-discipline is the biggest problem of the lack of vocations that religious orders are experiencing.” The decrease in capital vocations is a global phenomenon, but it seems urgent to find or recruit vocations to the capital. “I think the most important thing is to approach young people more kindly. This is also called affectionate intimacy.” “We need to open up a lot of opportunities to meet young people… Such a system in which a Catholic club takes charge of a school and is dedicated to it... Those efforts to meet more religious friends are now very active efforts.” At the same time, there is also a voice of self-reflection, saying that we should start by finding the original intention and striving for training like a monk. “According to the teaching of the Second Vatican Council, religious are those who are responsible for the life and holiness of the Church. When you live this part faithfully, you see that light and see the spiritual light, and young people voluntarily follow the Lord.” “We cannot be too concerned about the decline in vocations. Rather, we, the existing religious, should first become saints by taking it as an opportunity for new renewal given by God.” This is CPBC Kim Hyeon-jeong.
